Mid-Depth Rocky Reefs and Sandy Bottom
(Schooling Rockfish, Crabs, Lobsters, Scallops, etc.)
After a few Beginner-Intermediate outings, most divers are ready to level up to the Intermediate Freedive-Spearfishing class. This 3-hour experience is designed specifically for experienced divers who have mastered the pole spear for perch in the shallows and the speargun and dive light for rockfish in shallow water caves and kelp forests. This course is designed for divers who want to begin targeting more difficult wild foods which may include schooling rockfish, sargo, calico bass, scallops, Dungeness crab, octopus, and lobster with confidence, safety, and purpose.
Led by expert instructor Kevin Smith, this immersive outing focuses on hands-on learning in rocky reef and/or sandy bottom environments. You’ll gain foundational skills while targeting accessible species with a speargun and using a dive light in a depth range of 20-30ft. The types of resources pursued will depend on the specific dive and the season and natural range of these species (e.g. lobsters live in Southern CA, Dungeness crab live in Northern CA). Divers are strongly encouraged to reach out prior to registration if you are specifically interested in only a single species to ensure that the outing is in fact targeting that species.
